The Situation
In February 2011, Laverton received 150 mm of rain in 24 hours resulting in Skull Creek breaking its banks and causing significant flooding. Several properties and local roads were affected by floodwaters and road access to/from the town was lost for a number of days (video footage here).
Approach
Advisian completed a flood study of the area to determine and map flood characteristics and flood hazards, assess potential flood risk mitigation strategies and develop a Floodplain Development Strategy (FDS) for Laverton.

A site investigation was completed to observe local hydrological conditions and undertake ground and aerial survey, followed by hydrological and hydraulic flood modelling.

Results
The results of the modelling and discussions with the Shire were used to prepare a FDS to inform the community how to better manage flood risk in the future. The flood mapping results and the FDS were presented to the Shire and a range of community stakeholders.
