Following a major flood that occurred in February 2009, our consultants were asked by the Ipswich Rivers Improvement Trust to undertake a review the Videroni Street levee flood mitigation option.

The Situation

The Ipswich River Improvement Trust (IRIT) asked Advisian to undertake a review of their mitigation options that were outlined in the Bundamba Creek Flood Mitigation Study (JWP, 2004), providing a preliminary assessment of possible flood mitigation alternatives to those in the flood mitigation study.

Approach

One of the alternatives assessed a non-structural mitigation option which focused on flood awareness and improving the understanding of existing flooding characteristics and behaviour. Advisian’s software package, waterRIDETM was used to improve flood awareness and to enhance emergency management planning.

An additional structural measure was also assessed. This involved the construction of a permanent or a removable levee behind Videroni Street properties.

Following a major flood that occurred in February 2009, our consultants were asked by the Trust to undertake a review the Videroni Street levee flood mitigation option and to report on the 2009 event.

The study comprised a preliminary review of relevant factors, including:

  • Levee height

  • Internal drainage

  • Regional flood impacts

  • Overtopping events.

Results

Advisian provided a comprehensive review of flood mitigation options for Bundamba Creek. This provided the Trust an enhanced understanding of flooding characteristics which improved flood awareness and informed emergency management, with the aim to keep the community and their assets safe.
