The community housing industry plays a vital role, tackling Australia’s growing housing affordability crisis at a time when the financing landscape is undergoing major changes.
Late last year, Canada launched a $40 billion National Housing Strategy, bringing together the public, private and non-profit sectors to ensure more Canadians can access affordable housing that meets their needs. At the Community Housing Industry Association Victoria 2018 conference delegates heard from Derek Ballantyne, Incoming Chair of Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, the person tasked with implementing Canada’s National Housing Strategy.
“The event was a great opportunity to discuss system reform and the strategy to grow a sustainable community housing sector. I am now looking forward to see how the Australian government can bridge our national affordable housing market strategy,” said Nadia Jaworski, an Executive Consultant with Advisian.
There are many stakeholders in addition to government, including the community housing sector, who will shape the future of affordable housing.
Nadia continued, “The Community Housing Industry Transition Plan raised important themes such as growing a sustainable sector, meeting the needs of indigenous and vulnerable cohorts, enhancing the role as a social landlord, building awareness of the sector and workforce development.
Industry-led solutions are required to support reform in affordable housing and to build capability. This can only act as a catalyst if supported by the willingness of the market and government to consider housing models and solutions that are innovative, market-led, community co-designed and that drive value capture and value creation for tenants, the community, the private sector and government.”
