Timor-Leste is a relatively new and small country. Whilst its economy has been largely supported by the petroleum sector for the 15 years since independence, it is now looking to develop a diversity of industries for its long-term economic stability.
Whatever path the country follows, it will continue to be dependent on good management of its other precious natural resources, and on sound environmental practice to deliver the beneficial social outcomes, which are paramount for the people of Timor-Leste.
The Government now faces a dual challenge of creating an enabling environment to attract investment, whilst building a robust legal and regulatory framework to support and protect the country’s best interests.
