Case Study

Liquids Berth Dredging and Jetty Upgrade

Liquids berth dredging

Caltex’s Kurnell berths are a key part of their refinery and terminal supply chain. After over 50 years of operation, Caltex will now increase product import capacity.

The situation

Caltex’s Kurnell berths are a key part of their refinery and terminal supply chain. After over 50 years of operation, Caltex will now increase product import capacity by accommodating larger vessels, necessitating dredging and new breasting and mooring structures. To ensure fuel continuity for NSW, dredging needs to occur with minimal disruption to facility operations.

Our approach

Advisian provided initial approvals advice, concept design and dredging equipment selection recommendations based on geochemical and other studies. As the project developed, we provided geochemical assessment services, detailed design, permitting assistance, procurement functions, contract supervision and environmental monitoring.

The results

Finalising with a tight schedule due to Caltex’s accelerated plans for the facility, Advisian delivered:

  • Permitting functions
  • Detailed dredge design to minimise impacts on shipping operations and a preferred contractor
  • Contractor procurement functions
  • 24 hour dredging supervision
  • Water quality monitoring throughout the execution of the dredging contract

Jetty upgrade construction is now ready to proceed.
